Happy Birthday Grammy!!!!

Today we get to celebrate Grammy's birthday! My mom is a FABULOUS Grandma! She is full of crazy energy, and is one of the most fun people in the whole wide world. One of my mom's best attributes is her creativity, and that is part of what makes her an awesome grandma. She can turn any activity into an absolute blast. We have witnessed her dancing around with a crazy singing ostrich toy, hosting an annual Jello Egg propelling contest, and crawling through a baby-sized catepillar tunnel. She is up for anything at anytime, and always ready for fun.
Grammy visits Hawaii for Nova's 1st birthday

Recently we were talking about something having to do with my 2 months of torture in Michigan last year with a newborn baby, and it reminded me of what a great mom I have. i worked 14 hour days with the GYN Oncologist, and spent 8 hours at a time in the operating room. My mom coming to Michigan during those 2 months is one of the biggest sacrifices ever. She risked losing her job, gave up an entire summer, and spent 24 hours a day tending to mine and Nova's countless needs. She is the sole reason i survived that summer as a breastfeeding momma to tiny nova. when i gave her the phone signal she had baby nova out of the hotel, in her carseat, and was in the lobby of the hospital before i could blink. i would give nova a 5 minute drink of milk, and they were off again. she did that several times a day sometimes. that 2 months is just a small example of how she has lived her entire life. You are an awesome mom, and an outstanding example of who i hope to be to my own kids.

Today is also a day that our family especially remembers my beautiful niece, Ellianna. It is the anniversary of the day Ellianna was given wings to heaven, and the day she was finally able to run freely without the constraints of her earthly body.
Ellianna lived every single day of her 8 months on earth as the center of the world for her mom, dad, brother Kaleb, and sister Hope. Her huge blue eyes expressed the joy that her body couldn't. Hundreds of people who were lucky enough to know Ellianna will never be able to forget her, and today is a day to recognize the impact her short life had on so many people.

In memory of Ellianna, who spent many days in her red wagon, we are thrilled to donate a Radio Flyer Red Wagon for a family of a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy through the Tumbleweed Wagon Fund.
Please feel free to read below and donate to this charity if you can.
"Tumbleweed’s Wagon Fund for FSMA honors the memory of Braden (Tumbleweed) Ray Campbell (29 June 2003 – 05 May 2004). Through charitable donations and fundraising efforts, the fund helps to purchase Radio Flyer Wagons for type 1 children. FSMA sends the wagons out upon request to anyone having or caring for a child diagnosed with type 1. Once the babies lose muscle tone (hypotonia) and cannot adequately support themselves or lose their swallow and must remain horizontal, the wagons are beneficial for transporting them around the house, yard, doctors’ offices, hospitals, stores, etc. The babies love to be pulled around in the wagons and we believe it is more comfortable for them to be moved from one location to another in them as opposed to being picked up and carried frequently for feedings, diaper changes, etc.; particularly after they become more hypotonic. Additionally, attachments can be added to the wagon to hang favorite toys, tie balloons, or hang bolus or enteral feeding bags. The sides of the wagon can be removed so the babies can lie in them to nap or to watch their favorite television program, video, or DVD. For comfort, we recommend lining the wagon with egg-crate foam, memory foam, or a sheepskin blanket provided by the Families of SMA C.A.M. fund. Tumbleweed’s Wagon Fund is dedicated to providing a product that is comfortable and enjoyable for the child and, that in some small way, makes the challenge of dealing with spinal muscular atrophy more manageable for parents and caregivers. We will diligently work to promote awareness of SMA, conduct and support fundraising efforts to help fund restorative treatments and a cure, and be a source of support for families whose lives have been altered by a diagnosis of SMA. For more information, please contact the FSMA office at 800-866-1762"
To Donate go to the Families of SMA website and click the "Donate" button along the left sidebar. You can specify "Tumbleweed Wagon Fund" in the comment section if you choose.

Mission Impossible!!

Warning: This post is extremely long so that those responsible can relive the epic that was the swingset assembly.

The Culprits:
The Mission - to turn this:

Into this: complete with ladder, slide, swings and picnic table

The Matus gang ordered the best gift ever for our girls when they were here a few weeks ago - a swingset. The plan was that it would arrive right around the time my parents and grandma were here so my dad would be forced to help me put the thing together. But, thanks to major stupidity on the part of Walmart, it looked like my dad might escape the task. However, the company Coral reordered from was super quick and look what showed up at our door on Friday. 200 lbs of fun in a box.
The Nova's were immediately curious:

"When mom said we were getting a swingset I thought it would be much more fun than this!"

Step 1 - Carrying the loot to the backyard

Step 2 - Measure...

...Count...

...and label all the pieces.

Step 3 - Make great-grandma carry and stack all the lumber.

The building begins...

We have a slide...

"Nova" - from the greek word for "supervisor"

Dad using his head...

Daddy's little helper...

Something starting to take shape...

Are we really only on page 3?

Everyone got into the project...

Taking shape...

Wait a minute...did the die-hard Buckeye family really buy us a blue and yellow swingset?

Progress being made...

"This thing is going to be pretty cool...if you guys ever get finished."

"You know, with 5 hours extra work, 2 trips to Lowe's and skipping a couple meals we could get rid of that stupid picnic table and make this thing cool"

Starting to look like the picture in the directions...

"Nova" - from the Greek word for "supervisor"

"Wasn't it light out when we started this?"

It finally made it off the porch and into the yard.

Is it level?

In the homestretch...

No one will be able to tell if it's a half inch off center but WE'LL know...

Juneau takes a test run on the rockwall ladder...

...and a trial slide.

Check out those modifications! Nobody needed that picnic table anyways!

Juneau takes the inaugural swing

We truly almost couldn't get Nova to get out of the swing for Juneau's next turn. This is in the middle of a 20 minute ride.

After 1 more trip to Lowe's, the finals holes were drilled, the final screws turned, the final bolts tightened...and it turned out just like the picture...
...except with some valuable upgrades.

I have no idea how many total man-hours it took although I know we worked on it for parts of 3 days. Even though we gave my sister a ton of grief that she was responsible for bringing this project into our lives, I had a great time and I dare say my dad would say the same. This project was especially meaningful for me because I'll always remember it as the first big project that my dad and I did since I became an adult and we could work really as peers. It made for an enjoyable end to a great week with my parents and grandma in town.
In the end, though it was alot of work, the end result will be Juneau and Nova enjoying hours of swinging...
...and slide races.
Thanks Aunt Coral, Uncle Ed and cousins Alex, Lyndsey and Brent for the BEST present EVER!!

It might take a while...

After a full week of undivided attention, constant playtime, and unlimited holding and snuggling, it might take a while for Juneau and Nova to get back into the swing of normal life now that Grandma, Grandpa, and Mammaw are back in Ohio. In fact, they are probably just getting off the plane as i write this post.

The Stickley Grandparents are huge fans of the Stickley Baby Blog, and one of the main reasons we keep this thing up and running. I know even if no one else is reading, they are oooo-ing and ahhh-ing over every picture and story about their grandbabies.
This weekend we headed up to the Air Force Academy to drive around a little and look at some of the sites. Juneau and Nova had both made it through an entire church service in their own Sunday School classes. I was shocked that they both made it through without having their little number flashed up on the screen. Nova must have worn herself out in her class, because she slept through the whole tour of the Academy. Juneau functions pretty well on little to no sleep, and stayed up to enjoy the sites.

I adore this picture of Juneau. One of my favorites ever.

adorable

I don't think i know any other Great-Grandma's that give out piggyback rides!
Hurry back to Colorado Stickley Grandparents! We had an AWESOME week!

are you ready for some pictures?!

The gang has been BUSY!!! they have been hitting all of the hot spots in colorado springs, from feeding the giraffes at the zoo to Pike's Peak to Culver's for ice cream, there hasn't been a dull moment in the Stickley house since grandpa, grandma, and mammaw set foot on Colorado soil. I've had a rather busy week at work (which is going well, by the way!), but i've come home to a camera full of fun pictures every day.

Juneau and Nova are pretty much the 2 happiest little girls in the whole world right now! It's going to take some time for them to realize that life goes back to normal when the grandparents go home.

anyway, i will get on with the pictures. lots of pictures tonight! Enjoy! The view from Pike's Peak. A whole different kind of beautiful than our Hawaii scenery.

A super adorable nova in Mammaw's handkerchief
We're gonna have to keep a close eye on Grandpa to be sure he doesn't smuggle Sherpa back on the plane to Ohio.
We don' typically encourage jumping in the swimming pool fully clothed, but sometimes it happens anyway.
ahhhh, another one of my wonderful garage sale finds. unfortuantely, both girls wailed the whole way down the waterslide, then refused to get near it again. i guess we will have to package this one back up until they are a little bigger next year.

Favorite past-time. Squeezing their 25 pound bottoms into the dolly stroller and pushing eachother around.

They are weird, but funny.
Nova wiped out after a busy day with the grands.
Juneau and Grandma made the cutest project together - little stepping stones! They poured the cement, painted, and decorated. i will post a picture of the finished product when they are all set up in the yard.
And finally, a little sneak peek...
Look what showed up in our driveway Friday afternoon! A giant truck with a supercool present from the Matus gang that Daddy and Grandpa have been working on for the last 2 days straight. Stay tuned for the finished (and even improved, better than the original) product!
